Classification of Crime 

On the basic of nature of crime

On the basic of gravity of crime

on the basic of degree 

on the basis of a statistics 

 on the basis of objectives.




1) Offences of Relative Liability 

Offences occurs in coordination of Mens Rea and Actus Reus are offences of Relative Liability.

Eg: Murder, Theft, Arson, Treason etc.


2) Offences of Strict Liability 

-> Those Crimes which don't require Mens Rea to be proved are offences of Strict Liability.

Examples: Crime against Minor, Rape, Fraud, Corruption, Money Laundering etc.


3) Victimless crime 

Crime comitted with mutual consent between two doer or on their own consent is  victimless crime .

This crime committed in silent by which others hasn't direct effect but effect indirectly.Doer himself/herself is victim as well as offenders.

Example:Unnatural sex, abortion, corruption, suicide,consuming drug,prostitution etc.


D) Hidden Crime

The crime which are not reported to the police are hidden crime. 

Example: offences done in the name of religious practices, monetary inducements, blackmailing etc.


E) white collar crime

The committed non-violentely by professional are white collar crime.

Example: corruption, cybercrime, copyright, fraud etc.

According to Sutherland; " A Crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of their occupation." 


2)On the basis of gravity of crime 


A)Felonies 

The more serious Crime where all sentencing options are available is crime of felonies.

Example: Rape, Homicide, Treason etc.


B) Misdemeanors 

Lessserioius than felony 

It includes disturbing the peace, pretty theft, alcoholism, mulitation, fighting,quarelling etc.


C) Felony- Misdemeanors 

The crime which can falls under Felony or misdemeanors is felony misdemeanors crime. It is decided by government while prosecute.


D) infractions 

The normal violation of law, rule and regulation of daily life are infractions.

Example : Break traffic rules, Late payment of taxes etc.


3) on the basis of Objectives 


According to Willem bonger,

A) Economic offences : Theft, robbery, corruption, embezzlement etc.

B)Sexual offences :Rape, insect, bestaililty etc.

C) Political offences :Political Corruption, Treason etc.

D) Miscellaneous Offences : Homicide, Arson, Bribery etc.


According to Hayes;

Crime against order : Crime against public peace, riots or public disturbance.

Crime against Property :Theft, docoit, Cheating,fraud etc.

Crime against person :Murder, Rape, Assault Mutilation etc. 


4) On the basis of circumstances 


According to Edwin M.Lembert ;

A) Circumstantial crime 

- Offences occurs due to circumstatnces or due to inappropriate situation is circumstantial crime.


B) Planned Crime 

Any crime Committed by making Plan are  belongs under it.


C) Crime against trust 

A crime Committed by a public official for personal gain by abusing his official position or cheating by gaining anyones trust.


D) Crime against public order 

Any action which infringe right of others or harm public order ,peace in society is crime against public order.

Example:smoking in public place,Disturbing by DJ(Sound System)


5) On the basis of statistics

Crime against State 

Crime against order

Crime against Justice
